German helmet visor attachment
This visor is shown attached to front of a helmet and is a piece of armour worn by a soldier in the German army during the First World War. Steel helmets by themselves proved not to provide very effective protection against sniper bullets so this type of visor was designed to add an extra level of protection. It also made the helmet very heavy and difficult to wear.
When the Armistice was signed in 1918 to end the First World War the German army was required to forfeit much of their military equipment. Huge numbers of items were collected by the War Trophies Commission in London and distributed to museums and institutions across England.
