Magnificent riflebird

This is a male bird of paradise. The iridescent feathers on his breast form a shining shield which he displays in a dance to attract females. Female birds are solely responsible for nest building, incubation and nurturing their offspring. This bird is from the collection of Sir HJ Veitch.
