Harvest jug
This earthenware harvest jug is covered with lively imaginary maritime hybrid sea monsters and a compass with a ship in the centre. The decoration has been made by sgraffito = scratching the pattern through a layer of thin clay called slip.
An inscription reads: Come fill me / full and Drinke / a bout and Never / Leave till all is out / and if that will not / make you merry / fill me again
/ and sing y Down Derry / 1766
It is dated 1766 and has been likened to the work of Thomas Fields.
