Sickert was a German-born English painter and printmaker who was a member of the Camden Town Group in early 20th Century London. He favoured ordinary people and urban scenes as his subjects, and was known for his avant-garde Post-Impressionist style influenced by artists such as James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Edgar Degas, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin. His work often took inspiration from Victorian narrative genre painting, but concentrating on scenes of often drab suburban life which gave his paintings a sense of documentary realism.
