Chagford

Etching by Walter Richard Sickert (1860-1942) of Chagford, a small market town on the north-east edge of Dartmoor, Devon. The print depicts a landscape view looking towards Chagford from the surrounding countryside. In the distance is the parish church surrounded by houses and hills in the background. Signed by the artist to the bottom left, titled and numbered in pencil to the bottom.

Sickert was a German-born English painter and printmaker who was a member of the Camden Town Group in early 20th Century London. He favoured ordinary people and urban scenes as his subjects, and was known for his avant-garde Post-Impressionist style influenced by artists such as James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Edgar Degas, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin. His work often took inspiration from Victorian narrative genre painting, but concentrating on scenes of often drab suburban life which gave his paintings a sense of documentary realism.
