Common woodpigeon

The common woodpigeon is originally a species of various types of woodland in Europe. As woodland has been cleared over the centuries it has adapted its behaviour and it is now found almost everywhere across the continent. The woodpigeon it is an agricultural pest that is equally at home in gardens, feeding on lawns or even, clumsily, on bird tables.

It makes flimsy nests which are often predated, but the birds simply make another nest and try again a few days later. Populations form the north and east of Europe migrate westwards, sometimes in spectacular flocks, in the autumn. These huge arrivals are not warmly welcomed by farmers.
