Common magpie

The common magpie is a very striking bird whose appearance is taken for granted in much of Europe because it is so common and familiar. It is very suspicious of humans and their dog and cat allies. Magpies live in almost any habitat apart from treeless ones and those too densely wooded. It feeds in the trees and on the ground on almost anything it can find and it is known. It is widely hated for raiding the nests of smaller birds. The magpie’s habit of stealing shiny objects out of curiosity an to decorate its nest is commemorated in the phrase (and opera) ‘the thieving magpie’.
