Common pheasant

In its native range the common pheasant is a species of the steppes of Central Asia and China. There are many different subspecies.

Over the last 200 years it has been introduced to almost every temperate part of the world, including the UK. It is kept as a game bird and millions are bred and released every year. Those that evade the shoot form and feral populations. There is concern that the high numbers of feral pheasants causes local extinction of invertebrates and small vertebrates as well as allowing native predators such as foxes and crows to persist in artificially high numbers.
