European shag

The European shag is the common, marine cormorant of the north-east Atlantic and the Mediterranean. In breeding plumage it is a shiny, olive green with a bright yellow gular patch at the base of the bill and a long crest. It is duller when not breeding. It is commonly seen around any rocky coast and frequents harbours, jetties and the like. It nests in loose colonies, usually on offshore islets. This specimen came from Dawlish Warren.
