Harvest jug
We do not know the maker of this earthenware harvest jug from North Devon but we know its intended owner in the inscription on the side: Miss Ann Williams / Paul may Plant / and Appolos water / But God gives / Me Increase Bideford / 1866.
The decoration includes birds and flowers and has been carefully worked using a sgrafifito style. This means that a layer of cream slip (thin clay) was applied to the surface of the jug and then the design scratched through it with a point to reveal the colour of the jug underneath. In some places quite large areas of slip have been scratched away. A transparent lead glaze cover the whole jug to make it watertight.
