The Secret Life of Plants
A stunning piece of blown glass from Joanna Bird Pottery by Danish artist Steffen Dam; it is an illusion of reality that was inspired by fungi and decaying bulbs in the artist’s compost heap. The work draws together contemporary craft and natural history encouraging us to look at the natural history collection in a fresh light. Steffen kindly donated his preliminary sketches for the work.
The Secret Life of Plants was purchased for RAMM through Art Fund Collect 2011 in April. ArtFund Collect is a joint scheme run by the Art Fund and the Crafts Council. It aims to champion contemporary craft by challenging curators to acquire significant works of applied and decorative art by artists from around the world at Collect, the annual fair organised by the Crafts Council.
