Okehampton Castle

Seen from a distance, Widgery depicts a popular subject with artists in regards to the moor: Okehampton Castle. His contemporaries, for the most part, chose to depict the castle in all of the grandeur and imposing menace it once possessed. Widgery, however, chose to frame his piece with Dartmoor’s most beautiful scenery, honouring the castle by allowing it to to be the subject of attention despite the glittering West Okement river taking command of the foreground.
