Richmond Castle, Yorkshire

‘Richmond Castle, Yorkshire’ by Fredrick Richard Lee, c.1862. This oil on canvas landscape depicts a ruined castle on a hillside above a river: a stone bridge predominates the centre foreground. Two men are seen (one wearing a red coat and black hat, the other obviously dressed as a fisherman) stand by a boat on the water. Boulders, trees and hills are seen to the right. An overgrown ruined archway is seen at the end of the bridge left. The castle of Richmond was built following the Norman Conquest of England during the 1070s. The castle was built to defend England from the North.
