Self-Portrait as a Falconer
James Northcote was born in Plymouth and trained in the studio of Joshua Reynolds, a fellow Devonian. He was a prolific portraitist and self-portraitist but built his reputation principally as a history painter. Amongst his friends were the romantic novelist and poet, Sir Walter Scott. His enthusiasm for falconry was therefore entirely in tune with his artistic interests.
