Richard Crosse (Self-Portrait)
Richard Crosse was born at Knowle, near Cullompton in 1742. Though deaf from birth and unable to use spoken English his artistic talents were soon recognised and in the late 1750s he moved to London. For the next half century he exhibited at the Society of Artists, the Free Society of Artists and the Royal Academy. As a miniaturist he created some of the most striking portrait images of his age.
