Bedstraws

The Reverend William Keble Martin spent many years of his life collecting, studying and drawing plants. This drawing is a preliminary plate for inclusion in his book The Concise British Flora in Colour published in 1965. It corresponds to plate 42 in the final work.

The plants depicted are madder (Rubia peregrina) drawn from a specimen found at Combe-inTeignhead one August in the 1940s, northern bedstraw (Gallium boreale) from a specimen found at Teesdale 24 July 1945, crosswort (Cruciata laevipes), lady’s bedstraw (Gallium verum), hedge bedstraw (Galium erectum), fen bedstraw (Galium uliginosum), marsh bedstraw (Galium palustre), Galium mollugo, heath bedstraw (Galium saxatile) specimen collected at Gidleigh at 1200ft above sea level in July 1951, goose grass (Galium aparine), slender bedstraw (Galium pumilum), field madder (Sherardia arvensis), corn bedstraw (Galium tricornutum), Galium anglicum, pond bedstraw (Galium debile) from a specimen found at Chudleigh Knighton Heath, squinancy wort (Asperula cyananchica) and sweet woodruff (Asperula odoratum). RAMM also has his herbarium collection (pressed plants).
