Scrophulariaceae: figworts

The Reverend William Keble Martin spent many years of his life collecting, studying and drawing plants. This drawing is a preliminary plate for inclusion in his book The Concise British Flora in Colour published in 1965. It corresponds to plate 62 in the final work.

The ‘London Catalogue of British Plants’ in 100 sections became Keble Martin’s guide to his layout of ‘The Concise British Flora’. ‘It was fairly easy to put an early drawing in some corner, and to fit those of related species beside them. This method led almost unawares to the plotting of the 100 plates’. Some gaps waited more than 20 years to be filled.

The plants depicted are common mullein (Verbascum thapsus) drawn from a specimen possibly found at Newton Abbot 2 October 1929, ivy-leaved toadflax (Cymbalaria muralis), common toadflax (Linaria vulgaris) drawn for a specimen found at Coffinswell, fluellen (Linaria elatine), round-leaved fluellen (Kickxia spuria), slender mullein (Verbascum virgatum), pale toadflax (Lineria repens), small toadflax (Chaenorhinum minus) and weasel’s snout (Misopates orontium). RAMM also has his herbarium collection (pressed plants).

Purchased with assistance from the Friends of RAMM.
