Lid from a canopic jar

In ancient Egypt canopic jars were used to store the organs removed during the mummification process. This pottery jar lid is shaped like a human head and probably represents the god Imsety, protector of the liver. It was originally brightly coloured with yellow, red, blue and green pigments.
