Bust of Jupiter Serapis

Jupiter Serapis was a god who combined elements of Egyptian, Greek and Roman deities. This statue shows him dressed as a Greek man and wearing a ‘modius’ grain basket on his head.

Nature – including weather – was closely linked with religion in the ancient world. Jupiter Serapis was the ancient Roman god of clouds, rain, thunder and lightning who is often shown armed with thunderbolts. He was also the chief deity among Roman gods.
