Decorative ornament
This object was among the earliest archaeological items donated to the museum and was recorded as a ‘decorative ornament’ from Pompeii. It had been in the collection of Winslow Jones, a local antiquarian who was involved in establishing the museum in the 1860s. The object is Roman but its association with Pompeii is questionable as artefacts were often falsely given this provenance to make them more appealing to collectors.
