Animal roof finial
This pottery roof finial is shaped like an animal, perhaps a bear or a mythical creature. It is very unusual as it is virtually complete, only missing small portions of its legs. It was discovered in Exeter in 1883.
This pottery animal would have looked down on passers-by from a rooftop. The hole running
through its entire length meant that when the wind blew from the right direction the ‘bear’ howled. This highly unusual object was discovered in Exeter in 1883.
