Hook

Hawaiian fish hook, made from turtle shell. Turtles were highly valued and associated with chiefly status and divinity. They occupy a liminal position travelling between both land and water and were considered a valued sacrificial offering.

This item was collected by midshipman John Woodward Scott. He sailed with Captain George Vancouver to the Northwest Coast and Southeast Alaska, 1791-5.
