Parka

Taking a month to make, this parka is traditionally made by women from sea mammal gut. It is a waterproof outer garment that incorporates fur and dyed gut appliqué. Human hair also decorates the seams. These hooded parkas were worn over a fur parka as protection against the harsh elements of the wind and rain.
Donated by Whitney in March 1869.
