Lydia Bridge on the Avon, South Brent

‘Lydia Bridge on the Avon, South Brent’ by John Gendall, 1854. This oil on canvas by Gendall depicts in its central focus the Lydia Bridge surrounded by steep sided banks, trees and rockery. The scene seems, due to the browning foliage, to suggest it is of late summer, early autumn.

John Gendall (1790-1865) was an English artist who was best known for his landscapes of Devon. Gendall was an established local artist and was instrumental in the creation of the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, acting as its first curator.
