Painting of Thomas Lyte (1568-1638)
The Lytes were Somerset gentry who had lived in the county at least since the 13th century. They created the beautiful manor house which survives at Lytes Cary. This portrait shows Thomas Lyte (1568_1638) proudly wearing a jewel given to him by James I. Lyte had created a royal family tree which traced the kingês ancestry from the time of the Romans.
