Frome Hoard

During the Roman period money became part of everyday life for the first time. This hoard of 52,503 Roman coins was found buried in a pot near Frome. It is the largest such hoard ever found in a single container in Britain and weighs 160 kg. The hoard would have been difficult to recover after burial which has led to the suggestion that it was intended as a religious offering. It was buried in about AD 290.
