In the 1800s Italy was a popular destination for British artists. Keeley Halswelle lived in Italy for a number of years in the 1860s and 1870s. He painted many scenes of everyday life. After returning to England, Keeley painted landscapes of the river Thames and the Scottish Highlands. This painting was donated to the collection in 1983.
