Cremation accessory vessel
This small vessel was excavated in 1868 from a barrow surrounded by a ditch. It contains the cremated remains of an adult or juvenile. The bones were recently radiocarbon dated.
This type of pot is called an accessory vessel because it often accompanies large cremation urns but no such urn was found in this barrow. The pot is decorated with fine lines filled in with a red pigment (probably hematite).
