Water dipper or oil lamp
This object is among the earliest archaeological items donated to the museum and was formerly in the collection of Sir John Bowring, an important person in establishing the museum. It is described as a water dipper and was allegedly found in the tombs of the pyramids in Egypt, but it is more likely to be an oil lamp. Sir Bowring almost certainly collected it when on a trade mission to Egypt.
