Bag

This reticule has a different hand-painted motif on each side. The edges are piped with a silk cord which is also used to form a drawstring, and finished with silk chenille tassels. Painting on velvet was a popular pastime during this period. One technique involved preparing the velvet with a solution of gum tragacanth. The design was pencilled on and then completed with paints and Indian ink. This bag was probably home-made.
