Abalone
Abalone are also known as paua. Three species occur naturally in New Zealand; black foot paua (Haliotis iris), yellowfoot paua (Haliotis australis) and white foot paua (Haliotis virginea). The beautiful iridescent shell is often incorporated into Maori carving and used as jewellery.
