Studies of Butterflies
Edmund Gosse was brought up by his father the pioneering naturalist Henry Gosse. Henry's strict religious beliefs caused tension between father and son. Edmund drew these butterflies at his father's side during happier times.
On the reverse Edmund has written the names of the species depicted ‘1. The grey Hairstreak. 2,3. The Spotted Hairstreak. 4,5. The pale blue underside Hairstreak. 6. The 8 tailed Hairstreak. 7,8. Long tailed Hairstreak. 9. The arrowed underwing Blue.’ His father has written at the bottom ‘By E W G in the Spring of 1859’.
