Drinking pot and cover

This three-handled drinking pot was made at the Fremington pottery of the Fishley family in North Devon. George Fishley founded the pottery in 1811, and their traditions were maintained for a hundred years.
Edmund Fishley, son of George, made this pot and cover in 1843. The lid bears a sgraffito inscription: come sit down and merry be / and my Master comfort be / Play up jack and then you shall drink / Give the poor Fiddler / more drink more drink / O Give the poor fiddler more drink.
The figures decorating the pot are dancing couples and the lid is decorated with a figure of a fiddler and a dog.
