Pot

The Chancay inhabited the central coast of Peru, and were conquered by the Chimú, then the Inca. Through interregional commerce, they were strongly connected to the many states and chiefdoms that surrounded them.

Accessioned as a water pot, this terracotta jar is likely to have been intended for burial to accompany the dead. The means of acquisition for this vessel is unknown.

Donated by Mrs Tregellis in 1934.

H.340 x Dia.200mm
