Samuel Cousins, R.A.

This photogravure shows artist Samuel Cousins (1801-1887) in his sitting room. Joseph Parkin Mayall (1839-1906) photographed Cousins in his home at 24 Camden Square, London in 1883 as part of his series ‘Artists at Home’, which was published in April 1884.

Exeter-born engraver Samuel Cousins is well known for his works after paintings by Sir Joshua Reynolds and Sir Thomas Lawrence. At the time, prints made after the most popular paintings were in high demand. In 1855 Cousins was elected a Royal Academician. He was one of only two engravers who had received this honour at that time.

On the walls behind Cousins hang some of his most commercially successful works. Many examples of Cousins work can be found in RAMM’s collection. Two of them, 'The Calling of Samuel' or ‘Speak Lord For Thy Servant Hears’ after James Sant and 'Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI in the Prison of the Temple' after Edgar Melville Ward can be seen in the photograph.
