Spear club

This two-handed fighting staff was not only a weapon but also a staff of office for a chief. Decoration included paua shell, wool and dog hair but this example is adorned with a collar of kiwi feathers. Carved with a face and a protruding tongue (apoko) this tip would challenge a visitor to determine if they were friend or foe.
