John Angel was born in Devon in 1881, and was a student of the Exeter School of Art. Angel spent most of his life in the United States, sculpting many notable public works. He frequently took an architectural and ecclesiastical focus to his work. Angel was also the sculptor behind the Exeter War Memorial in Northernhay Gardens. He died in 1960 leaving a legacy in the collection of his material, now part of the Smithsonian Institution and Yale University Library.
