Painting

This painting on mica was made in Thanjavur, India in the late nineteenth or early part of the twentieth Century as a souvenir for visiting tourists. It is part of a collection depicting various landscape scenes and images of Hindu and Muslim religious celebrations.

“Lord Vishnu is the one who is blue, holding the discus. This particular painting is one of the most popular ones in south India, narrating the holy wedding of Meenakshi (an incarnation of Goddess Parvathi). The painting narrates one particular aspect of the wedding called "Kanyadaan", which means offering the bride to the groom. It is a tradition in India that the elder brother offers his sister to the brother-in-law. On this particular occasion, Lord Vishnu is fulfilling the role by offering Meenakshi (goddess Parvathi) to Sundareswar (Lord Shiva).”
