Bathing dress

This is a ladies bathing dress. It is made of dark blue serge (a type of wool cloth – worsted twill) with white trimming. It has a sailor style collar and short sleeves. Bathing costumes for men were also available. Wool was popular for garments worn next to the skin in the late 19th century, as it was believed to have health benefits.
