Huipil

It is a good example of Amuzgo weaving. It was woven in three webs: these have been joined with loose stitches. The squared-off head opening has been cut in the centre web, and secured with decorative stitching. The Amuzgo used to grow and hand-spin cotton — this may be the case here. The ground is plain (tabby) woven in white. Commercially produced cotton threads of various colours have been used for decoration. The centre web has a vertical magenta warp strip on each side. Designs are brocaded: supplementary coloured wefts have been used. Sometimes several magenta weft threads are used together.

Purchased by donor in February 1967.
