Sarape

A thick woollen shawl used by men.

Single-web rectangular cloth, woven on a backstrap loom with four selvages. Hand-spun wool yarns (perhaps from a black sheep, but possibly overdyed to get a richer black) and white commerical cotton thread have been used. The warp carries the design, with the white cotton thread creating fine lines against the black. Once woven, the cloth may have been given a mildly ‘felted’ finish.

Purchased by donor in January 1967
