Spoon

This is part of a silver spoon which has lost the bowl and the end of the handle. The handle is formed from unevenly-twisted thick wire and at the bowl end is a solid, quarter-circle offset with ‘rat’s tail’ attachment. Although there are no other known similar items from Britain it is thought to be late Roman. It may have been deliberately cut up as ‘hacksilver’, whereby pieces of silver were used for currency or bullion. This item was found whilst metal-detecting, reported to the Portable Antiquities Scheme and declared Treasure.
