Faja

Made circa 1993. Sash with warp stripes woven on a backstrap loom. K'iche' weavers in the Nebaj region specialise in brocading. One end of the sash displays a small area of single-faced brocading: a bird and a female figure are worked with supplementary weft threads of several colours. Nothing is seen of these designs on the underside. According to Ann Hecht, a 'bold lacing technique' is used by brocade-weavers in Santa María Nebaj and two neigbouring villages. The sash goes round the waist more than once, with the decorated end on view. The cloth at both ends of the sash is folded under to make a V-shaped finish: the trailing warp ends have been gathered into a single braid and given two tassels.
