This close quarter combat weapon is said to have belonged to Chief Rangiaho. (This could be interpreted as Rangiaho, the wife of Chief Tawhiao). It was taken by Sgt. Howard Strong, one of the Poverty Bay volunteers fighting at Ngatapa Pa (a major Maori fortress) in 1869. This ornately carved weapon is taonga (sacred) and was a high status item.

More information about the attack on Ngatapa Pa can be found here https://nzhistory.govt.nz/war/te-kootis-war/ngatapa
