Honiton (East Devon) lace sprig

Here is a very hungry caterpillar represented in East Devon lace. A sprig of apple blossom and leaves are worked in whole stitch and half stitch. Ribbed and rolled work add a three-dimensional effect. The caterpillar is worked with a twisted vein through its body and head, and purls to give the impression of legs. The lace is designed to make it look as though the greedy caterpillar is munching its way along the stem. This skilled work was carried out by Louisa Tucker, who also planned the design. Her father’s firm had supplied lace for Princess Alexandra’s wedding.
