Nathaniel Newnham
Portraits of this type were widely popular in the 18th century when land ownership was an indication of wealth and power. Whilst they did reflect fashionable taste for landscape gardens, such images were essentially displays of property. In this Sir William Morice was typical as his lands enabled him to secure the parliamentary seat of Newport and Launceston.
