Paper string

This piece of string is made from paper and is thought to have been made by the German army during the First World War. It is stored in an envelope dating from the early twentieth century which states “String made of paper, a German substitute brought from Cambrai during the war 1914-1918. Miss Bessie Baker”. During the war the French town of Cambrai was used as a storage and supply depot for the German army. The string was probably brought to Exeter by a soldier as a souvenir of the war, and donated to the museum by Miss Baker.
