Lacis lace sample
This square shaped sample of lace displays an embroidered net technique known as lacis in France. Mrs Bury Palliser, the lace collector and historian, records this piece in her 1869 inventory as having been purchased at Rouen in Northern France. She describes lacis as a counted stitch technique. The characteristic regular shaped pieces were made up into bed furnishings and altar cloths. The darned motif on this piece could represent a tree of life design.
