Le Puy lace sample

This sample of Le Puy lace was collected by lace historian Frances Bury Palliser. It is a narrow bobbin lace with heavy chenille thread. Le Puy in France had a flourishing lace trade at the time that A History of Lace was published (1864). Le Puy laces were exported in quantity to Spain, Portugal, Germany, Italy and England. Bury Palliser commented on the variety of laces made there: silk, thread, worsted, gold, silver, and novelties like this piece.
