Tonder lace sample

This is an example of Tønder lace made in Denmark. Frances Bury Palliser, the 19th century lace historian, gave all 24 samples of Danish bobbin lace in her collection an early date, labelling this one 16th to 17th century. The pretty, delicate style of this sample is more in keeping with early 19th century designs, and probably dates from around 1840. The simple twist net ground bears similarities with the lace of Lille and the English East Midlands at this period. These laces were used to trim caps, bonnets and clothing.
