Pestle

This is a hand-held stone ‘pestle’ which was used with a stone bowl called a ‘mortar’ for grinding materials such as spices for use in cooking, or in temples. This one was made in the Cypriot Bronze Age or Iron Age, and similar objects can be found in domestic kitchens today. The man who donated this object to the museum was Commissioner of Larnaca between 1879 and 1908 and collected many archaeological objects during his time on the island of Cyprus. Unfortunately he did not record where any of the objects were discovered.
